Participatory budgeting

Participatory budgeting is a democratic and collaborative process that empowers citizens to actively contribute to the allocation of a portion of public funds. Through this approach, community members are directly involved in decision-making, influencing the planning and distribution of resources in their localities.

Participatory budgeting is recognised as a tool to enhance transparency, accountability, and civic engagement within local governance structures. By providing citizens with a direct role in shaping priorities and projects, the process strengthens, the connection between communities and their governing bodies. Participatory budgeting is implemented in various locations worldwide, spanning municipalities, schools, and, in some instances, used in the national level. Its success lies in fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among citizens, ultimately contributing to more inclusive and responsive public decision-making.
